Dumpling Ingredients
Pastry
- 3 cups flour
- 3 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup shortening
- 1 cup milk
Filling
- 1 cup sugar
- 8 tablespoons butter
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 8 apples (cut in 8 parts each)
Syrup
- 1 cup sugar
- 7 tablespoons butter or margarine
- dash of cinnamon
- dash of nutmeg
- 1 3/4 cup hot water
Directions
for Apple Dumplings
Sift flour before measuring. Sift
flour, baking powder and salt together. Cut in shortening
until mixture resembles meal. Add milk to form soft dough.
Roll dough 1/8 inch thick. Cut into circles large
enough to enclose apples. Pare and core apples; cut into
eighths. Place enough apples, about 2 1/2 teaspoons
cinnamon mixture, 1 tablespoon butter or margarine in center of circle
of dough. Wrap and place in well greased baking dish,
allowing space between dumplings.
Combine syrup ingredients and when boiling hot, pour around apple
dumplings. Bake at 425 degrees for 10 minutes, then decrease
heat to 350 degrees and bake until apples aare tender (about 20-25
minutes or until light golden brown.
